                                               THE LEGEND OF CHINA TRADE

When I'm doing research for a painting, I often look to old stories having to do with Indian lore and legends.  The painting, "China Trade" is based on a very old story about a young Paiute brave, the daughter of a Chinese railroad worker, the child they had together, and a wondrous wolf.

This is how it goes...................

Many years ago, in what is now known  as Utah, a tall handsome young Paiute Indian brave fell in love with a beautiful young girl, the daughter of a Chinese railroad worker.  Their parents were against the union of the two young people, but they were desperately in love.  Because of their people’s opposition to the marriage, the young couple decided to run away and find their own way in the world.

Soon a tiny baby girl was born of their love.  On the night the baby girl was born, a full moon shown in the velvet black sky and in the far distance the cry of a lonely wolf echoed through the mountains.  The young couple took this as a sign and named their daughter, Wolf Moon.

As the years passed, Wolf Moon grew tall like her father and beautiful like her mother, her long hair was like the dark night sky and her eyes were like the deep pools of water in her favorite swimming place.  During their travels the young girl found a friend along the way, a beautiful she-wolf.  The she-wolf protected Wolf Moon and was her constant companion.  The two had great love for one another.

One dark and cold night, when Wolf Moon was about 18 years old, her world was changed forever by a marauding band of Apache.   Tragically the Apache band raided her parent's small camp and killed her mother and father.  The Apache saw that Wolf Moon was young and beautiful and wanted her for slave trade.  Wolf Moon's friend, the she-wolf fought bravely to save her mistress, and during the struggle, many Apache were wounded from her strong teeth.

Seeing one of the Apache about to throw a knife and kill her friend, courageously Wolf Moon placed herself between the wolf and the Apache..............she stood there bravely and said nothing..........suddenly everything was quiet, no one moved.

In that one moment of sudden defining silence the Apache felt the powerful spirits of this brave young woman and her wolf, and backed off.  The Apache were in awe of the courageous Wolf, they feared her magic, and so they dared not kill her.

Now Wolf Moon waits bravely for the trade that will soon happen, wrapped in the only remaining possession she has to remind her of her Mother, her Chinese shawl.  Her beloved friend, the courageous she-wolf, guards her still, as she always has and always will..........

Together, they wait for the CHINA TRADE
